The earliest known references to Maid Marian can be traced back to the late medieval ballads and plays about Robin Hood, which emerged in the 15th and 16th centuries. These ballads depicted her as a noblewoman, often the daughter of a nobleman or knight, and frequently portrayed as Robin Hood’s love interest.

The origins of the name “Maid Marian” are somewhat uncertain. It is believed that the name “Marian” is derived from the French name “Marion,” a diminutive of “Mary.” The title “Maid” refers to her unmarried status and is often used to signify her youth and innocence.

King Charles  II features on the obverse of 2023 10 oz Maid Marian Silver Coin. His Majesty ascended to the throne in September 2022 following the death of his mother, Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. The new king is captured here in left-profile relief in a design from Martin Jennings, the first of King Charles III’s reign.

Maid Marian is depicted in the reverse design of the 2023 British Maid Marian Silver Coin. In many retellings of the Robin Hood legend, Maid Marian serves as Robin Hood’s love interest and companion.
