Britannia became a powerful symbol of the British Empire during the height of its colonial expansion. She was often depicted in various forms of art, literature, and propaganda as a guardian and protector of the British Isles and the empire’s overseas territories. Her imagery was frequently used to convey ideas of strength, stability, and imperial dominance. Britannia’s presence in coins, paintings, and sculptures during this period helped reinforce the notion of British imperial might.

The obverse side of the 2024 British Gold Britannia Coin features a portrait of His Majesty King Charles III. This bust of the new monarch was created in late 2022 by Martin Jennings and follows British tradition in capturing male monarchs without a crown and flipping the orientation of the monarch’s portrait from the reign of one monarch to the next.

On the reverse field of 2024 1/2 oz Gold Britannia Coins, you will find the image of Britannia. This depiction from Philip Nathan was created in 1987 and features on the silver, gold, and platinum versions of the Britannia bullion coins. The design shows the full-length figure of Britannia looking to her right with a trident in her hand as her left hand clutches an olive branch and rests on a Union Jack shield.
