American history is full of iconic images that bring to mind thoughts of a time that has come and gone. Two of the most iconic images from the history of the American West are the buffalo and Native Americans. The 1 oz Sunshine Buffalo Silver Round features both of these images from American history.

1 oz Buffalo Silver Rounds are produced each year by a variety of private mints across the United States. This particular round comes from Sunshine Minting in Coeur dAlene, Idaho. The Sunshine Mint is a private firm based in Idaho that handles the processing of silver, gold, and other precious metals. The mint is famous for its silver blanks that it provides to the United States Mint, and is also a highly regarded manufacturer of private silver and gold bullion.

The obverse Native American image featured on the 1 oz Sunshine Buffalo Silver Round was originally designed by sculptor James Earle Fraser in 1913, and was first featured on the Indian Head Nickel. The image features a portrait of a Native American chieftain. In addition to the image, the word Liberty appears to the right of the round.

The reverse image features the left-facing profile of an American Bison as it grazes on a small patch of land. The buffalo used to model the image reportedly came from an animal named Black Diamond who lived at the Central Park Zoo in New York City around the same time James Earle Fraser created the Indian Head Nickel. The phrase One Troy Ounce is stamped above the bison, while the purity and metal are stamped below.
