On this smallest gold note in the series, Prudence is depicted as an indigenous figure native to the Utah region of the United States of America. Prudence is a female personification of the character trait of prudence. Though the modern world has translated prudence as cautiousness, it actually refers to one’s ability to govern and discipline themselves by the use of reason.

Prudence is depicted on the obverse of 1 Utah Goldback Gold Notes in this weight of the series. The female figure of Prudence shown here wears the traditional dress of the native indigenous tribes originally found throughout the region in and around modern-day Utah. This includes, for example, the Ute and Paiute people. You will notice an inscription of the Latin-language “Prudentia” which led to the 14th-century Old French word “prudence.” It is broadly associated with wisdom, insight, and knowledge.
