Since the reintroduction of the Gold Sovereign in the 1950s, only one monarch has featured on the coins: Queen Elizabeth II. With Her Majesty’s passing in September 2022, a new era dawns for the modern Gold Sovereign with the debut of King Charles III’s portrait on the obverse of the coins.

In the obverse design of 2022 British Gold Memorial Sovereign Coins, the Royal Mint features the new left-profile bust of King Charles III. In keeping with 20^th-century traditions for male monarchs, Charles III is shown in this bust by Martin Jennings without a crown on his head.

For the reverse field of the 2022 Gold Memorial Sovereign, the mint offers up its Platinum Jubilee depiction of the Royal Arms. Issued on the last Queen Elizabeth II Sovereigns to mark her 70^th year on the throne, this beautiful design captures the shield of the United Kingdom supported by the Lion of England and the Unicorn of Scotland, with an Imperial Crown overhead.
