The design of the American Gold Buffalo Coin comes from the historic Buffalo Nickel. Introduced in 1913, the Buffalo Nickel was designed by James Earle Fraser to replace the Liberty Nickel design. Fraser’s design was approved by the administration of President William Howard Taft.
In the obverse design of the 2023 American Gold Buffalo Coin, the mint features the right-profile portrait of a stoic indigenous figure. Fraser created this portrait by combining the physical features of three real-life tribal figures from the early 20th century. This design was the first on a major American coin to feature an indigenous American figure.
For the reverse field of the 2023 1 oz Gold Buffalo Coin, the United States Mint features the American bison design. Also created by Fraser, this visual shows the massive Plains bison in left-profile relief. The animal is shown on a small mound of dirt. The Plains bison is one of two subspecies of bison living on the North American continent.
