Canadian Maple Leaf coins from the Royal Canadian Mint come in a variety of options each year. While the Gold Maple Leaf Series is the only version of the coin with multiple weights, the program is available in silver, platinum, and palladium as well.
For the astute follower of this program, you’ll find that the Canadian Silver Maple Leaf and Canadian Platinum Maple Leaf mark different annual anniversaries in 2023. While the Silver Maple Leaf is available for the 44th time, this is just the 30th year of availability for the Platinum Maple Leaf.
The Platinum and Silver Maples debuted at the same time in 1988. From the start, the Platinum Maple was available in four weights and eventually expanded to fifth in 1993. Unlike the Silver Maple, the Platinum Maple suffered two breaks in production between 1999 and 2001 and again from 2003 to 2008.
The obverse side of the 2023 1 oz Platinum Maple Leaf comes with a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. For the final time, Her Majesty will appear on the obverse of these coins after her passing in September 2022. This portrait is Susanna Blunt’s fourth-generation design from 2003.
On the reverse field of 2023 Canadian Platinum Maple Leafs, you will find the sugar maple leaf. This design was created for the series in 1979 by Walter Ott and has been used on countless versions of the Maple Leaf Series in the decades since.
