The 2023 South African Big Five Series II Buffalo Coin is the fifth design in its series and is a limited mintage of only 15,000 coins. Each coin contains 1 Troy oz of .999 pure silver in brilliant uncirculated condition. The face value of 5 Rand (R5) is fully backed by South Africa.

The obverse of the coin displays a detailed close-up of a Cape Buffalo with the South African coat of arms beneath it. The obverse also includes inscriptions that read South Africa, Big Five, and 2023.

On the reverse of the coin, you will see close-up views of two halves of a buffalo’s face. If you purchase multiple coins, you can line them side by side to form a complete picture of the face. All coins will arrive to you in protective blister cards which feature details about the Cape Buffalo as well as a Certificate of Authenticity.

The Cape Buffalo is easy to identify thanks to its enormous curved horns. The horns of adult male buffalos are so close to each other at the base that they actually fuse, forming a mighty head shield known as a “boss.” Female Cape Buffalos do not have such prominent horns, which allows you to differentiate them while on Safari. The greater the horn size, the higher ranking the Buffalo will likely be in the herd’s hierarchy.
