Each 5 oz SilverTowne Pony Silver Bar available in this listing comes in a protective plastic sleeve. These cast silver bars have designs that are struck into the surface on the obverse side of the bar, which feature the Pony Express rider and identifying hallmarks. On the reverse side, you will only find the natural textures and striations that result from the process of casting silver.

The Pony Express was established as a faster way of delivering mail and information from the established states of the Eastern United States to the new state of California, before the rise of the transcontinental telegraph. It was a network of individual riders who constantly switched out with another rider-horse team to move quicker. From April 1860 to October 1861, the Pony Express moved parcels and mail from Missouri to California.

The obverse side of the SilverTowne Pony Silver Bar features a left-profile relief of a Pony Express rider and his steed sprinting along from one station to the next. The field also includes the weight, metal content, and purity, along with the SilverTowne mint mark. The reverse side of the silver bar is blank.

The Pony Express went out of business in 1861 due to bankruptcy, despite running for only 18 months. It was a highly romanticized system that many held up as an emblem of the American West, as its crew of hearty riders on reliable steeds raced across the wilderness to deliver packages.
