The United States Mint was founded in 1792 with passage of the first-ever Coinage Act by the United States Congress. The mint began issuing coins at its Philadelphia Mint location in the years to come, but by 2006, some 214 years later, the US Mint had never issued a 24-karat gold coin.
All of these 2024 1 oz American Gold Buffalo Coins are available in Brilliant Uncirculated condition. The coins are packaged in either plastic flips or acrylic tubes of 20 coins. The American Gold Buffalo’s debut in 2006 marked a seminal moment in US Mint history and reflects the historic designs of the 1913 Buffalo Nickel.
On the obverse of the 2024 American Gold Buffalo Coin, the mint features James Earle Fraser’s bust of an indigenous figure. Captured with a stoic look on his face, this indigenous figure is the result of Fraser’s combination of the facial characteristics of three real-life tribal figures from the early 20th century in America.
The reverse side of the 2024 1 oz Gold Buffalo features another design from Fraser. This image captures an American bison standing on a small patch of dirt in left-profile relief. The bison’s head is lowered as it grazes on the grass from the mound. This design was inspired by Black Diamond, a bison living at the Central Park Zoo in the early 20th century.
