Each of the 1 oz Asahi Buffalo Silver Rounds available in this product listing comes with proof visuals in new condition from the mint. Proof silver rounds have frosted designs overlaying mirrored fields for beautiful contrast between the two elements of the round’s design. The rounds are packaged individually inside of plastic flips, in tubes of 20 rounds, or in boxes of 100 rounds. The box holds a total of five tubes.
The Buffalo Nickel was introduced in 1913 by the United States Mint. The design was created by James Earle Fraser, a native of Winona, Minnesota. He used his experiences growing up in the Upper Midwest and Central Plains in selecting designs representative of the indigenous tribes of North America.
On the obverse side of 1 oz Asahi Buffalo Silver Rounds is the bust of an indigenous figure. This tribal figure is shown with a stoic look on his face and braided hair that has feathers woven into it. There is an inscription of “Liberty” on this side that reflects some of the original elements from the Buffalo Nickel. There is also an Asahi Mint mint mark.
The reverse field of Asahi Buffalo Silver Rounds features the iconic American bison. The largest land mammal in North America, the bison was vital to the culture and survival of the tribes that inhabited the American Plains. The American bison shown here is in left-profile relief on a mound of dirt with its large hump above its shoulders and shaggy mane captured in brilliant detail. Fraser used Black Diamond, a resident bison of the Central Park Zoo in the 20th century, as inspiration for his design.
