Krugerrands are named for both the fiat currency of modern South Africa, the Rand, and the famous 19^th-century Boer leader, Paul Kruger. Kruger served as the President of the South African Republic, a self-governing Boer state, for three non-consecutive terms. He first took office in 1883 and later held the presidency from 1888 to 1898. Kruger was a staunch advocate for the rights of Afrikaners and worked to maintain their independence from British rule.

The obverse of the 2024 South African Gold Krugerrand features a left-profile bust of Kruger. Known affectionately during his lifetime as Oom Paul in Afrikaans, or Uncle Paul, Kruger’s portrait shown here was created in the 1890s for use on gold coins of the South African Pound denomination.

On the reverse of 2024 1/2 oz Gold Krugerrands, you will find the Springbok antelope. This depiction of the antelope pronking along the savannas was created for South African coins in the 1930s and has featured on the Krugerrand since 1967.
