Canadian Gold Maple Leaf Coins debuted in 1979 with 1 oz gold only and continued as such through November 1982. Starting in 1982, the mint introduced three additional fractional-ounce coins through 1986. The first coins introduced were the 1/4 oz and 1/10 oz coins, with these 1/2 oz gold coins first issued in 1986.
Obverse features on the 2023 Canadian Gold Maple Leaf Coin include a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. Her Majesty is shown here in right-profile relief without a crown, the only portrait of her reign to follow this tradition of male monarchs from the United Kingdom. These 2023 1/2 oz Gold Maples are the last in this series with Her Majesty’s effigy.
Reverse design elements on 2023 1/2 oz Gold Maple Leafs include the popular sugar maple leaf. This image of the national emblem has been on the reverse of all coins in this series since its debut in 1979.
