Krugerrands were introduced in 1967 as a means of promoting private gold ownership and the gold reserves of South Africa. The coins combine the name of former President of the South African Republic, Paul Kruger, and the fiat currency of the modern nation, the Rand. South African Krugerrands are 22-karat gold coins with 91.67% gold content and 8.33% copper.
Kruger’s time in office came to an end during the Second Boer War. As the war turned against the Boers, Kruger left the Transvaal in 1900 and went into exile in Europe, seeking international support for his cause. He settled in Switzerland, where he lived until his death on July 14, 1904. Kruger’s death marked the end of an era in South African history and the decline of Boer independence.
The obverse of the 2024 1/10 oz Gold Krugerrand Coin comes with a portrait of Paul Kruger. As a leader, Kruger was beloved among his people and was often referred to as Oom Paul, the Afrikaans term for Uncle Paul.
On the reverse side of 2024 South African Gold Krugerrands, you will find the Springbok antelope. The design shown here was created in the 1930s and featured on various denominations of South African currency before being adopted on the Krugerrand in 1967.
