In 1980, the Rand Refinery and the South African Mint introduced new gold coins in the South African Gold Krugerrand Series. The coins were introduced in 1967 with only 1 oz gold options available. Given the popularity of the series, the 1980 release brought with it the first fractional-ounce coins.

The 1980 release introduced the new 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz gold coins. At this point in the history of the gold bullion coin market, the Gold Krugerrand was the dominant coin, accounting for 90% of the market.
